St. Nicholas Day in Greater Vancouver

Editorial/Pamela Chan

In a few days St. Nicholas will be visiting locations in the Lower Mainland. If you’re looking to start a new tradition during the Christmas and holiday season, this is one that you won’t want to miss.

In 2012 we went to visit St. Nicholas at Amsterdam Greenhouse in Pitt Meadows. It was a lovely, peaceful event that made a deep impression on my then three year old twins. For some time afterwards they referred to Amsterdam Greenhouse as the place where St. Nicholas visited.

Here are the details about the celebration at Amsterdam Greenhouse on Saturday, November 30th, 2013:

* complimentary hot chocolate and Dutch treats

* enter a colouring contest to win prizes. (PDF to print out. Deliver by December 1st, 2013, 5 PM.)

* visit Sinterklaas from 10 AM – 2 PM  (Bring your camera.  Sinterklaas is dressed differently than Santa Claus.)

* 10:00 AM  Children can create their own table centerpiece using fresh greens. (Children 7 and under need adult supervision.) A cost of $10 per child includes the cost of materials used.  Pre registration is required.

Top right.  Stuffing the shoes with carrot sticks wrapped in foil.
Bottom right: A few days before December 5th, my 3 year old daughter decided to get ready.
Left: We depart from Dutch tradition and put a little gift in the shoe. In this case it was small books.

  1. We’re in the midst of trying to figure out what kind of charitable giving we want to do with our son. I think a twist on this would be really fun. Get some shoes as a gift for another child who needs them and stuff them with gifts for him/her. That way he can play at being St. Nicholas too. Thanks for the idea!
